Governor Haley Barbour has asked the federal government to stop the construction of a casino
in the county of Jones, by mentioning wastewater treatment problems. Mr. Barbour, in a letter sent on Wednesday to the environmental protection agency, noted that he observed deficiencies with the underground wastewater system on the site near Sandersville, especially when groundwater discharges. “These findings clearly indicate that the evacuation will not be provided and they are not matching with the federal environmental standards” said Mr Barbour. He also said that the EPA should stop the project until the State determines if the site is matching with the environmental regulations. He also asked EPA to provide to his office and to the Health Department of Mississippi, documents copies filed by the casino on its system of wastewater treatment. Approximately 500 to 700 slot machines and a snack would be provided by the casino, a huge problem that the casino has to fix.
